Jump through the hoops of life

I don't remember if I heard this one somewhere along the way or if it is my own.....either way I use it a lot in my life today when I am working toward goals or teaching others to do the same.

Jump through the hoops.     It is vital when we are working toward a goal, or, for people in early recovery who are involved with the system (probation, courts, financial institutions) to remember that a lot of the things we want to achieve require us to jump through hoops.

My analogy for this is a dog trained in agility.   A dog that is, literally, trained to jump through hoops, does this because there is some reward at the end.  Whether it be a treat or praise, they do the hoop jumping to please their human.   After doing it many times it becomes habit and they do it out of habit and the reward.   They don't get the same level of reward or praise if they miss hoops along the way.  Their human will retrain them to jump through every hoop.    We are in much the same position as humans in our everyday lives.   Train yourself to jump through the hoops to achieve your goals.

If you have the goal of getting a career you want rather than one you have to be in,  you will have many hoops you will have to jump through.  If you are in early recovery you might have to jump through hoops to gain the trust of your family back.   If your desire is to go back to school and get that degree, yup, you guessed it, hoops.    Anything worth doing is going to have hoops we will have to jump through.

Some are going to be easy.   Much like the German Shepherd (shout out to Cheba) who is able to easily jump through a hoop two feet off the ground, we might be in the same scenario with a goal we have.  Maybe a hoop is simply asking for help to fill out paperwork to get into school.  Not to tough a hoop to get through.

Yet, there will be other hoops that will seem insurmountable.  The young dog who has been practicing on the agility course, but, just can't get up and through the hoop four feet off the ground.    You will have hoops that seem this same way.    I remember distinctly the first time I stepped foot on a college campus as a 29 year old man with a desire to get a degree......I was scared to death.   This hoop was ten feet off the ground in my mind....but, I had to get up and through it.

Jump through the hoops of life.  You will have some that are easy, and some that are tough, but jump through them.    Many times you will feel compelled to go around a hoop, but I would encourage you to not.   Take one thing at a time and remember to jump through the hoops so you can achieve the goal you set out to achieve.    There WILL be hoops that you will think are useless, but, if it is a hoop that is needed to get to the next step in your goal, jump through it.    Trust me on this one........I did not like having to call a phone number every day in early recovery to find out if I had to take a bus to downtown Tacoma to pee in a cup, but, it was a necessary hoop I had to jump through.   I wanted out of the system....so, I jumped through the hoops that were set before me.

Write this somewhere you will see it everyday:    Jump Through The Hoops
