My special friend......Sarah
Today is Sarah's 11yr anniversary as a person in recovery. I met Sarah in 2002 after moving to Eburg to be closer to my son Tyler. I met her in the recovery community, both of us were in recovery and navigating this thing called life.
Sarah is someone who makes you feel important from the second you meet her. She has a way of making you feel good about yourself with her words of encouragement and telling you to not let others get you down. She is someone who is willing to try anything once, twice, or sometimes if she really likes it, a thousand times. Sarah and I clicked from day one. We have been friends ever since.
To say Sarah and I have been through some things would be a massive understatement. We have seen the best things life can give, and, we have seen some of the worst. Through it all we have remained friends. Sarah has always been there for me when I really needed it most. Whether it be a need for me to hear words of encouragement, or, to tell me I am making a decision I might regret, she has been one of my mainstays over the last 16 years of my life.
I have been able to watch Sarah walk through some tough stuff in her own walk in life. As we all know life can hand us situations we wouldn't wish upon our worst enemy. Sarah has walked through these times with a level of courage I haven't ever seen in anyone else. She has a way of being raw in her most vulnerable times that I admire. She will ask the questions that need to be asked so she can learn how to get through the tough times that life gives us all. Through it all she stays steadfast to who she is at her core.
With Sarah's perseverance and tenacity she has climbed peaks all along the west coast...from Shasta to Rainer and beyond, she has literally climbed to the top. This last year, after years of work and training, she completed her first full marathon in Las Vegas. See, the thing about Sarah is......she doesn't do anything half way.....it is all in, or, it isn't happening. With mountaineering, running, hiking, road biking, or, rock climbing, she is going to put in the work. Her efforts have proved to be amazingly successful.
In Sarah I have gained a life long friend.....a little sister that I never had. Sarah is one of my main confidants in life. I teach others to have "champions" in their lives. Five or so people who know everything about you...people who will pick you up when you are down and will push you to the limits when you need it. Sarah is one of my champions.
And it should not go without notice that fun is what Sarah is all about. Whether we have been snowboarding on Sampson street or T-rex'ing it with Tyler at Alpental, Sarah knows how to have fun. I think it is one of the major reasons Sarah and I have always been friends......we can go from having stupid crazy fun to helping each other through the crazy parts of life and it is all good in the end.
On her 11yr anniversary as a person in recovery I applaud her. I applaud her for being her no matter what. She is a bright and shining example that their is no one path to get to, and, stay in recovery from a substance use disorder. Sarah is an amazing human who has an amazing life that is full.
