Do you wanna get lucky?
Fools wait for a lucky day but every day is a lucky day for an industrious man
-Buddha
I lived part of my life believing one day I would get lucky.......One day I would get lucky and get the job I wanted, or, one day I would get lucky and win the lottery, or even better, one day I would get lucky and would turn my life around by some stroke of luck........none of those ever happened.
Believing that one day I was going to get lucky and have all of those things only kept me stuck in doing nothing. It was only when I started doing the work to change my circumstances that luck found me. When I actually looked for a job I got lucky and was able to get an interview and have a chance at getting hired. When I earned money and paid my bills I started to get lucky and found myself able to buy a lottery ticket. Only realizing the lottery is gambling and gambling is not a lucky thing to partake in at all. When I was faced with the reality of my addiction and was able to get help I found out that luck and addiction don't go together at all. Getting out of addiction takes a lot of work. Once I was in recovery and doing the deal I started feeling lucky because my life turned into something amazing.
See, my true belief is that we don't get lucky at all. We get busy and luck tends to find us. When I am putting one foot in front of the other and taking action it is amazing how lucky I get. I have found myself being the most lucky person out there in my career and personal life....through action.
Below are a few of my mainstays to help me find luck:
Short and long term goals (1-3yrs & 5-10yrs)
Having goals keeps me focused and on task. It is important to revise these goals as needed. I ensure the goals I set are realistic and achievable. When a goal is achieved I celebrate the hell out of it and set a new one. I never want to be done.......I always want to be working toward a goal. It helps me in my life overall, and, as a person in recovery it keeps me far away from wanting to go to any drug.
Champions (4-5)
What is a champion? Someone who knows and supports me. Someone who knows everything about me and knows my heart's desires. I have champions in my professional career and in my personal life. These are people who are willing to challenge me and call me on things when needed with the purpose of helping me better myself. This is someone who knows my strengths and pushes me to do my best in areas I might not know I need to work on. These are NOT negative nellies. I do not surround myself with people, especially my champions, who are constantly negative, or, are ones to just say it's not worth it all the time. Champions are people who know me, care about me, and push me to do my best.
Always learning
I am passionate about learning. For me it came later in life, and if I had it to do over again, this is one area I would have started much sooner. I am always reading about areas I work in to learn as much as I can. As a person in recovery I following current information in the field so I can know what is happening to help others. In my work as an educator I read about information that is current and relevant to the field. I always try to keep an open mind to new information. This is another area I never want to be done with.....I always want to keep learning.
Keeping a positive mindset
I am quote driven. Every day I read a random quote to start my day. I watch videos from speakers who are changing the world through their own actions. I like to read material about people going from tragedy to triumph. I have lived a life of tragedy and crisis. Having done that I am grateful for the amazing life I have today. I always keep this in my mind and stay grateful for the things I have. Keeping a positive mindset takes work.......it takes me doing specific things to quiet the voices in my head that can try to steer me off my course toward my goals. I have created habits that keep me on positive mindset.
