Families in Recovery
Last night Katrina and I went to Tyler & Chania's for dinner. Tyler's boys, Anthony and Alarik were there and we enjoyed having dinner and spending time with them all. This is normal for our family. At least a few times a month we either have dinner at our place, or, at their place. Each of our homes are places where family dinners happen regularly. A meal prepared in a healthy and safe environment.
Here is the amazing thing about this; Tyler, Chania, Katrina and I are all in recovery. We can each share how because of access to treatment and ongoing recovery supports we get to live amazing and healthy lives in recovery today. We are a family in recovery who are breaking generational cycles of addiction. Anthony and Alarik are witnessing what happens when people find a life in recovery and all the amazing things that follow. Parent's who are in their lives regularly. Grandparents who are regular part of their lives.
We hear often about the damage of active addiction but don't hear enough about the power of families in recovery. The reality is there are millions of people in recovery who are enjoying amazing lives. There are families just like ours, right here in our community, who are doing the same things are families are doing. Families who have found their unique path to recovery who are integral members of the community.
We each have our professional careers that have a positive effects across industries and throughout the community. We each have our unique recovery support systems that help us maintain and enhance our personal lives and the the lives of others. We all support Anthony and Alarik as they grow and learn healthy ways of living and thriving in the world.
We know other families in recovery in our community who are doing the same things we are doing. We need to hear more about this and how each family continues to support their lives in recovery. We need to hear how they follow their own unique paths so others can see that recovery does work and lives do change.
Recovery works, lives change.
