Gail Sharon Ulery (Heselwood)

Gail Sharon Ulery (Heselwood)
Born on 12-14-1941
Died on 01-07-2019

Gail was a mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend who left this earth to be with her savior on the afternoon of January 7th, 2019.    She left this earth just as she wished; she was in her home and at peace.   In her final weeks she was surrounded by a constant flow of love and care by all who entered her world.

Gail was born in Tacoma, WA on December 14th, 1941 to her parents Victor and Annette Heselwood.   Gail is survived by a twin brother, Gary (77) and Lois Heselwood of Mansfield, WA,  a sister and two other brothers, Carla Heselwood (67) of Tacoma, WA, Mark (63) & Marcie Heselwood of Gresham, Oregon, and Dennis (67) & Kathy Sonsteby of Arlington, WA.    Gail will join her parents in heaven to celebrate eternal life.

She was married to John Ulery of Ellensburg, WA.   Gail and John were married in Ellensburg, in 2013 and were living a life of love together until the end of Gail’s life on earth.   Both of them expressed their only regret is that they had not found each other sooner in life.  Gail loved how John was able to craft amazing things out of wood and always encouraged him to show the world his creations.  Their home was filled with John’s creations that he would bring in to show mom and she wouldn’t let it leave the house.   John’s final gift to mom is a beautiful urn crafted by his hands.

Gail left behind four children who will remember her as a strong and supporting mother who was always there throughout their lives.   Bob Emmerson (57) of Tacoma, WA, Tina (55) & Travis Wood of Byesville, OH, Cheri (53) & Jon Gumm of Tacoma, WA, and David (51) & Katrina Douglas of Ellensburg, WA will all remember their mother as the one mainstay in their lives from their childhood through their adult lives.   All of Gail’s children have kind hearts, strong resilience, witty humor, and love with no bounds.  All of these are parts of Gail that each of them will continue to pass on to their children and grandchildren, ensuring Gail’s legacy lasts forever.

Gail was loved and will be missed by eighteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.   She loved all of her grandchildren and expressed that she wanted them all to know how much she loved them.

Her friends were many.  From lifelong friends Judy & Al Niederriter to recent friendships she forged through a cardplaying group where she lived in Ellensburg, Gail will be remembered for her kindness and sense of humor by all of her friends.

Gail worked her entire life in the restaurant industry.  Waitressing, cooking, bartending, or managing; she did it all.   Gail worked with family in the iconic Hob Nob in Tacoma, WA and she worked in the original Ocean Shores Inn at Ocean Shores, WA.    So much history was created throughout her working years.    All of her kids were brought up in the restaurant industry from the time when they were old enough to reach the counter.   Gail worked two and three jobs throughout raising her children.   In an era where being a single mom and working was not the norm, she forged her own path to ensure her family always had what they needed.    Never having a lot, but always ensuring her children had what they needed.

She retired in recent years and spent time with family and friends doing the things she loved the most.  Shopping, playing pinochle, and most important, time with family.    She was an avid Seahawks fan and had a Seahawks themed car to show her pride in the team.   Gail’s quick wit and sense of humor always played into all she did.   Loving, funny, and always at the ready to help wherever she could.

Gail’s legacy is strong.    She leaves behind so much for her family to carry in their memories and lives.    A love that knows no bounds.   A willingness to have an open mind to all that life gives us.   A sense of humor that is a fabric in all of the family.  Always wanting to find ways for family to be together.  Whether through regular calls, text messages, special occasions, Gail always wanted to stay connected to all she loved.    Gail’s love for animals is one of the areas that is a strong legacy that is who Gail was and who her family is.    Many times at a family gathering there would be more dogs and cats than people, and, she loved it.    Her pets were family.

A celebration of life will be planned for the spring, so all can travel to attend.   The family thanks all who have touched Gail’s life along the way.

In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be directed to the The Foundation at KVH Home Health and Hospice and/or Kittitas County Hospice and Friends.
